#690 Jay Howell

Why this card is awesome: Because we can see an interesting patch on Howell's arm, but I don't know anything about it. Do you? I see that we can see it much better on Moose Haas' card.

Cool stat: Howell was a really good reliever for a whole bunch of years. For relievers from 1988 to 1993, he had the 3rd-best ERA+ (minimum 200 IP.) Our man Jeff Montgomery actually beat him out.

#1 on that list: "The Otter", Gregg Olson. He was just inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame. It's easy to forget how dominant he was before his elbow blew up in the middle of the 1993 season. What a shame.

In my mind, Gregg Olson and Tom Gordon are forever linked as the two hot rookie pitchers of 1989. Gordon is still going, although he's out for the year this season and may, for all I know, retire.

I'm pretty sure that the patch commemorates the 1987 All-Star Game, held in Oakland.

The patch is for the 1987 All-Star Game, which was held at Oakland Colesium.

Here's a good view of it: http://storesense1.carrierzone.com/HS12284/Detail.bok?no=31

According to a jersey description here, they wore an All-Star Game patch in 1987. http://www.huntauctions.com/online/view_lots_items_list_closed.cfm?auction=14&start_number=101&last_number=200

I should add, by the way, that I think Jay Howell was the losing pitcher in the '87 All-Star Game.

Yeah, you're right, he was the loser in the 1987 all-star game:
