2003 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites #31 Steve Lyons

Why this card is awesome: Because it's a nice classically-posed card, with a bonus jumping jack in the background!

Compare this to Lyons' regular 1988 Topps card, which is right here. The above photo was clearly not taken at the same time as the original card, given that Lyons is wearing a totally different uniform. He also looks much younger here, although that may just be due to the lighting.

Also, notice how the card back shows just his games with the White Sox.

What a mediocre player to use as a fan favorite? Was Ivan Calderon unavailable?

Yeah, Calderon was dead.

These cards aren't necessarily the best players--just fan favorites. Psycho was definitely of great interest to fans, perhaps not for the right reasons, though.

Another Lyons, Barry Lyons, is in the 2005 Fan Favorites set solely due to the fact that he was willing and able to autograph cards. According to lookups at the Ultimate Mets Database, Lyons wasn't even the "favorite" catcher on any of the Mets teams for which he played.

I do have a fan favorite Gary Carter card coming up...

Psycho was a hit with the Chicago ladies. They would wave dollar bills at him after his "brief" appearance at first base.

I wasn't even aware of this card's existence. He does take a pretty good posed shot on most of his cards. My favorite is the 1990 Fleer where he is under the cloudy sky.

I'm still puzzled by the White Sox Daryl Boston Fan Favorites card. I don't remember him being that big of an attraction.

After needlessly sliding into the Cardinals dugout after a foul pop that landed about 17 rows back and fracturing John Tudor's patella in 1987, Barry Lyons will never be a favorite of this fan.

I think that if they had the ability to sign enough autographed cards, they were deemed "Fan Favorites." The lack of Mackey Sasser in Fan Favorites disappointed me greatly. At least his career had a story to it. ;)

Speaking of Mets catchers, what about our old budy Tim Spehr?
