#155 Bruce Sutter

Why this card is awesome: Because Sutter doesn't look very happy in this photo, perhaps because he just missed the entire 1987 season due to injury.

Cool stat: Sutter has 2 of only 9 seasons in history where a reliever pitched at least 100 innings, had an ERA+ of at least 180, and struck out a least a batter per inning. Dick Radatz also has 2 of those 9 seasons.

Hall of Fame count: 16

He must be upset because the Bravos can only afford mesh hats.

I have this exact same card, however, it's thicker, with blue edge. And the number on the back isn't a number, it's a letter, E.

i'm not sure if it's an error card or not. It mentions Sutter and breaking a save record.

Luke, that sounds like a 1988 Topps wax box bottom. It's probably not the exact same photo, but one taken at the same time. From time to time, I've checked eBay to see if I could pick up a complete set of the box bottom cards from that year--I think there were 12 or 16 or so. I'd like to show them on this blog if I can.

Bruce was one of the best relievers ever. He made the Cardinals a team that could win the World Series. It sure wasn't Ken Oberkfell at third that made them winners. His 1977 season ranks right up there with the absoulte best ever.
