#704 Dennis Boyd
Why this card is awesome: Because I can't tell what's going on in the lower right-hand corner of the card. I sort of assuming we're seeing part of an umpire and/or catcher and/or batter, but I can't tell what's what.
Cool stat: From 1984 to 1986, Oil Can Boyd was one of the most reliable starters in baseball, ranking 6th in complete games. He had injury problems after that. Boyd last pitched in the majors in 1991 but as recently as 2005 he was still active in professional baseball, playing with the Brockton Rox (MA.)

What is the rhyme or reason to when card companies put a player's nickname on a card? I think that Topps always referred to Boyd as "Dennis," though it seems that most of the other card companies referred to him as "Oil Can." It seems weird that Topps would not use Boyd's common and very original nickname, but would, e.g., refer to Tim Raines as "Rock" on cards in the early '90s.
That Padres catcher....what was his name....Santiago, that's it. Anyway, he thinks Topps should have put Denny Boyd on this guy's cards.
Good point, indefense. As a kid, I was thoroughly confused by the inconsistencies between card companies. For a time, I thought Rich Gossage and Goose Gossage were brothers.
I thought that too, David! :)
How can you not include an awesome nickname like "Oil Can"?
