#659 Bobby Meacham

Why this card is awesome: Because if you're a Yankees fan (and I know that some of you are...) it's weird to see a Yankee who is NOT Jorge Posada displaying the uniform #20. I'm guessing that after Posada is done with it, no Yankee will wear #20 again.

Cool stat: Meacham, currently the third-base coach for the modern-day Highlanders, had a pretty short career. He hit 8 homers, and 2 of them came off Ron Romanick.

Meacham has proved to be an equally poor 3rd base coach as he was a hitter. He's the one who sent Chien-Ming-Wang home from 2nd on a single to the outfield that resulted in his foot injury.

I don't think Wang's injury can be blamed on Meacham. Wang wasn't running that hard, and the pitchers do running drills every day.

Not blaming him for the injury, but there's absolutely no reason to send him home in that game where even the possibility for injury existed. Maybe if CMW was wearing a warm-up jacket while running the bases, Meacham would've thought twice.

No reason? I think winning a game is a worthwhile reason.

To be fair, it was a game where CMW was pitching dominantly, the Yanks were at the moment leading 4-0, and went on to beat the Astros 13 - 0. Despite hindsight being 20-20 and all that, on the B-R page: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/HOU/HOU200806150.shtml we see that when CMW scored, the yanks had a 96% win probability.

I like your use of WP.

Of course, if Meacham had held Wang and the Yankees went on to lose 5-4, he would have been KILLED.

The bottom line is that Meacham did the right thing. If I recall correctly, it wasn't even that close a play at the plate.

You are correct in that it wasn't a close play at home (despite CMW pulling up lame half-way there). Just think of this rant as being from a frustrated Yankees fan and it'll all make sense. :-)
