#564 Frank Lucchesi

Why this card is awesome: Because this card demonstrates how things have changed over the years. Look at this photo of Lucchesi. How old would you say he is in the picture? I myself would guess about 70. But he was born in 1927 so in this picture he was just 50 (and in fact is 71 at this writing.) This is my point. In 1988, being 50 was being old. But these days, 50-year-olds are much healthier than they used to be, and lots of people who are in their 70s now look the way people in their 50s did back then. I bet Lucchesi looks pretty much the same today as he did then.

Cool stat: Lucchesi managed the Cubs for just 25 games in 1987, taking over for Gene Michael as the Cubs finished last (although at just 76-85 were not a terrible team.) The Cubs had just two guys play more than 142 games that year, which is among the fewest in MLB that season.

If Frank was born in 1927, first of all, this card has an error (it says he was born in 1926; I'll defer to B-R and its 1927 date). More to the point, he would've been 60 at the time of the photo. He still looks old even for 60, though.

There have been other posts of managers that look much older than they actually are (maybe here, but I don't remember where). Maybe its just baseball wearing these guys down.

capewood, I think you're thinking of what I wrote on Sparky Anderson's card:

Yes, that's what I was thinking of.

Don't you love those hangy-down ears on ol' Frank?

Wasn't he also involved in an assult by the Ron Artest/Latrell Sprewell of the 70's, Lenny Randle?

Perosonally, I love this card solely because this guy, who I have no memory whatsoever of, looks completely and absolutely bat$h!t insane. I'm reminded of the actor from Dodgeball. I can see him with a fungo bat trying to hit wrenches to Shawon Dunston.
