#221 Rafael Belliard

Why this card is awesome: Because of the weird stuff on the ceiling of the Mets' dugout. Who knows what that is? Looks like a big number 11.

Cool stat: Belliard had just 2 career homers, and they came more than 10 years apart. Since 1901, nobody has gotten at least 2500 PAs without hitting at least one homer. Belliard is among 16 players to have just 1 or 2 homers with that many PAs.

I could never figure out why Bobby Cox wasted so many at bats on Rafael Belliard in 1991 and 1992. It's not as though he was Omar Vizquel out there at SS and Jeff Blauser was so far superior a hitter it wasn't even funny.

You may have wondered whatever happened to the 1970's band that had the hit song "Love Will Find a Way"? They became a baseball scout and signed Rafael for the Pirates.

Now, on with the countdown.

The Braves have a display with the uniform Belliard wore when he hit that last home run in their museum at Turner field. The announcer (Skip Carey I think) went absolutely berserk when he hit it too.

I believe those are the dugout phones on the wall.

pac man had it made until the bucs finally traded for a better bat, at least in the form of Jay Bell

Rafael Belliard: 2 Career Homers. I wonder if there is anyone out there (fan-wise) who witnessed both

Cecil Fielder: 2 career stolen bases. Opposite ends of the hitting spectrum connected by the number two.....

Belliard was a hell of a bunter, no facts to back it up, but wow, could he bunt! That's why Cox gave him so many at-bats.
