#115 Johnny Ray

Why this card is awesome: OMG, this card is hilarious. Look at the terrible airbrushing between Ray's legs. I'm guessing they blacked out a player sitting in the dugout, but they made it look like Ray is shooting dense black gas out of his ass. Just terrible.

Cool stat: Ray has the most career seasons since 1901 with exactly 5 to 7 HR, minimum 100 games played per year.

Why would they airbrush some guy on the bench?

Probably because his face was visible between Ray's legs and they thought THAT looked weird. See Ryne Sandberg's card for another such example.

Actually, it looks pretty clearly like a jacket hanging from a hook in the dugout. Notice that the airbrushing doesn't go all the way down and that the shape looks a lot like a jacket with the sleeve hanging down one side.

probably the best buc of the early/mid 80's.

Luke, that's saying something. He had to beat out Sammy Khalifa, Doug Frobel and Benny Distefano for that accolade. I suppose Tony Pena would have been his only real strong teammate on the Pirates.

For some reason, driving on Highway 69 through Oklahoma in the late 80's, I seem to remember a sign at the city limits to a small town touting itself as the home of Johnny Ray.

Holy cow, somebody mentioned Benny Distefano!!! He was my first autograph, one also one of the last ever left handed catchers.

I just found this blog last week, and I;s really sory the I missed the giveaways. 1988 Topps holds a very special place in my heart because it was the first year and first set I collected. I was finally able to finish off this set after about 15 years of the box sitting in my closet. I even tracked down all of the errors and variations.
