Tournament poll #3

Brett is one of the game's all-time great players. He won batting titles in 3 different decades and gave the game its most recent serious run at a .400 BA for a full season. This photo is one of the best action shots of the set. The only markdown, in my opinion, is the crazy zombie eyes.

Strawberry was one of the most feared power hitters of the late 1980s, and we need to forget our disappointment at his career in the 1990s when evaluating this card. One thing I notice about the card is the shin guard, which Darryl made famous in the late 1980s. Topps picked great colors for the Mets cards, exactly matching their blue and orange team colors. It's a great card for a great player.

I just noticed that the shots on these two cards are remarkably similar. Nobody would ever think of Brett and Strawberry as having similar stances or similar swings, but they happened to get caught in similar poses here.

No love for Tony Gwynn in '94? I know it was a strike season, but I would still consider it a serious run at .400. Also, as far as we know, Tony doesn't crap his pants twice a year.

I have lots of love for Gwynn but I don't think he got as far through the season hitting as well as Brett did. I'm not saying he sucked, for sure, plus Gwynn DID hit .400 over a 162 consecutive games including most of the 1994 season.

Did I just vote for a Met?

Good Lord, what's happened to me...
