#456 Dave Anderson

Why this card is awesome: Because it's always nice to see a huge video camera taking up an entire quadrant of a card. Nice job. Also, very oddly, this is the second straight Dodgers card. I wonder why?

Cool stat: Anderson most total bases in a game was 6.

Wow, looks like this may have been your toughest to find "cool stat"

then again there was almost nothing cool about Dave Anderson

You're right, Jim. The most notable thing about Anderson is really how much he was used as a pinch-hitter.

The Hillegas card was a late addition to the set; it was originally supposed to be Steve Carlton. They dropped him from the set when they thought he was going to retire. He ended up coming back and pitching 4 more games for the Twins before hanging it up.

I always hated that Topps didn't make cards of people they thought were retired, they did it football too. Usually they were great players that people would want another card of.

I always thought of cards as records of the past: each set was a summation of the previous season, i.e. the stats on the back. But card companies, looking for the competitive edge, designed sets to be prognostications of the season ahead. Seemed a little silly to me, considering how unstable rosters are with respect to players on the cusp.

My favorite sets that are produced today are the ones of retired players. I'm just having a hard time getting back into baseball like I once was. The '94 strike, and now the whole steroids thing. But I'm still trying.
