#452 Willie Wilson

Why this card is awesome: Because I'm very surprised that Willie got such a poor card number. Granted he was past his prime by 1988, but he was by no means a slouch. He scored 97 runs in 1987 despite missing a handful of games.

Cool stat: Wilson was a triples machine. From 1979 to 1989, he had 7+ triples 11 different times (i.e. every year.)

Topps did a nice job making sure that there was enough blue on the card.

Interesting how similarly posed Willie and Mookie Wilson are in their respective cards.

I was a Royals fan and this guy had great numbers over the years. I met him at a signing once and he was personable. He does a lot of charity work in the KC area now.

However, for some reason, I only remember him for 2 things: drug issues and striking out every freaking at bat in the 1980 World Series.

I remember being very impressed with the number of ABs he would get. I guess that'll happen when you bat leadoff on a pretty good team and almost never take a walk.

Great point, mmayes! In fact, Wilson's 12 Ks in 1980 is a World Series record!
